Judicial case managers and other justices of the peace

More than 300 justices of the peace serve communities around BC. The Chief Judge assigns duties to three types of justices of the peace:

  • Judicial case managers

  • Justice of the peace adjudicators

  • Court Services Branch justices of the peace

Judicial case managers

Judicial case managers (JCMs) schedule trials and hearings. They also preside in some pre-trial court appearances such as initial appearance and assignment courtrooms where they deal with matters before a trial that do not require a judge’s decision.

JP Adjudicators are lawyers who conduct simplified small claims trials in the Vancouver and Richmond courthouses in cases involving from $5,001 to $10,000.

Claims from $5,001 to $35,000

Court Services Branch justices of the peace (CSBJPs)

CSBJPs work in court registries. Among other duties, they swear criminal informations, issue summonses and arrest warrants and deal with matters related to sureties.
