One of the ways the BC Provincial Court fulfils its commitment to be transparent and accountable is to publish a comprehensive annual report. The Court’s 2023/24 annual report is now available on our website. The Court’s previous reports have been described as “fantastic”, “amazing”, “engaging and readable” and this one aims to meet the same high standards.

This year’s report includes:

  • data on the Court’s judicial officers’ demographics, how it met its operational standards, and how it responded to complaints about judicial officers
  • caseload statistics including the numbers of self-represented litigants and remote appearances
  • information on the Court’s efforts towards reconciliation with Indigenous communities and its progress in increasing access to justice in family court and through use of technology

The new report delivers all this and more in a colourful package featuring photos by the Court’s judicial officers and staff members and whimsical paintings of courthouses by local artists, including a judge!

Each year’s report contains interesting facts. Just a few from 2023/24:

  • as of March 31, 2024, 52% of full-time judges were women; 59% of judicial justices were women
  • the Justice Centre (where judicial justices conduct weekend and evening bail hearings by video or telephone and consider applications for search warrants) saw increases of 48% in the number of warrant applications and 22% in the number of bail hearings over the previous year
  • the Court’s website had 418,493 users and 1,231,309 page views in 2013

Dozens of people within the Court contributed their time, interest, information and photographs to inform British Columbians about how their Provincial Court functioned in the last fiscal year.
